CNPC pledges to halve methane intensity by 2025
China’s largest oil and gas producer, CNPC, has announced a new target to reduce methane emission intensity by 50% between 2019 and 2025. The OGCI member company is aiming to move to the forefront of methane emissions management.
To achieve this ambitious target, CNPC has installed 48 methane recovery stations for associated gas at the Tarim oilfield in the Xinjiang region, with capacity of 4.2 million cubic metres per day. The recovery capacity for associated gas at Changing oilfield in Shaanxi province reached 1 billion cubic metres per year.
CNPC had previously targeted a reduction in methane intensity of 12.3% from a 2017 baseline in support of the OGCI methane intensity target. As an OGCI member, CNPC also supports the aims of zero routine flaring by 2030 and is working to strengthen emission monitoring and plugging methane leaks.
