Leading the industry response to climate change

Our focus

A catalyst for change

OGCI is a CEO-led initiative focused on accelerating action to a net zero future consistent with the Paris Agreement.

To achieve its ambitions, OGCI’s 12 members are targeting net zero emissions at their own operations and collaborating with companies and partners across the industry and in other sectors to urgently reduce global greenhouse gas emissions.

To support companies outside the group, OGCI focuses on partnering, capacity building and innovations to target key technologies and areas that can have the greatest impact on emissions reductions.

OGCI’s current focus areas include carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS), methane emissions reduction and transport emissions.

Oil and gas climate initiative

Path to net zero operations

In order to accelerate action, OGCI is working on key initiatives in these areas:

CCUS

The world will need to store many gigatonnes of carbon dioxide per year as part of a broad package of solutions to get to net zero emissions. OGCI is working with industry, governments and other investors to scale up carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS).

Methane emissions

Working towards near zero methane emissions from oil and gas is a top priority for OGCI. Our objective is to help achieve near-zero methane emissions across the oil and gas industry and along the full gas value chain.

Transport

Decarbonizing transport is a key part of all global pathways to get to net zero. OGCI is focusing its collective efforts on ways to reduce CO2 emissions in shipping and other hard-to-abate sectors.

Latest news
Sonangol becomes the first African oil producer to subscribe to the “Aiming for Zero Methane Emissions Initiative,” an initiative launched by the Oil and Gas Climate Initiative (OGCI) with the aim of encouraging the oil and gas industry to reduce methane emissions to near zero.
Most recent resource
A new study from OGCI has identified opportunities for CCUS to decarbonize Brazil’s iron, steel and ethanol industries, while creating economic value and jobs. CCUS is widely viewed as an essential technology that can decarbonize hard-to-abate industries such as steel, chemicals and cement and is one of the most cost-effective ways to achieve the Paris Agreement net zero ambitions.
